Well, I run a few forum-based RPGs, most of them games of a limited duration than usually don't take as much of my time as a more complex game might do. Usually I'm lenient(probably too much in some cases) at the characters I approve as long as they are not too bad.
However, recently I received a character which most certainly wasn't like anything I usually see. Livejournal cuts following--
Meet Su-Ren, the amazing dog...
Character's name: Su-Ren
Age: thousands of years old (but around 4 months old in his current body)
Gender: Neutral (But male in his current body)
Race: Neutral (But a German Shepphard puppy in his current body)
Eye color: Black, clouded over in a white fog. (No matter what body he's in, that body's eyes develop a strange cloudy look inside them.)
Hair/skin/scale etc.. color: Like you'd expect most German Shepphards to look like. He has a mix of Tan, black and white fur which is very soft and shiny.
Abilities/Weaknesses:
-Speaking Telepathically
-Keeps his knowledge regardless of where his spirit resides
-amateur knowledge of almost any profession and advanced knowledge in a few professions
-High perceptual abilities, short-sighted telepathic awareness and heightenned senses and general awareness
-Changing bodies with weaker animals (eg dogs, squirrels) at anytime or with other stronger creatures who are near death, in a coma or trance, or otherwise unavailable consciousness... and surviving (barely if the creature was near death)... and eating thier soul in the process.
-Imbues his bodies with additional dexterity, quickness and endurance than normally found in that race/individual
-He cannot attack, or chooses not to, as he has sufferred punishment in later lives as a result. He can only make counter attacks and defend himself or others.
-Gains any strengths or innate abilities of any bodies he enters
-Weaknesses include any weakness the body or mind he inhabits might have... eg impulses comming from a dog's love of meat.
-Cynical
-Death wish, occassional craziness because he does not fear death
-He doesn't want his current body to die without having another host or else he would be forced to be reborn again in a random dimension and body
Equipment: Collar
Universe/time of origin: Various dimensions of earth.
He is a spirit that has been reborn countless times in many realms, in the heavans and the depths of the many hells. He hopes to achieve peace which he believes can only come from a permanant death without rebirth in another body. He is cynical and selfish, with only permanent peace in mind, but yet without knowing it, is open to changing his ways during the course of the story.
His skills in battle are limited to defence but his other abilities such as his great knowledge, heightenned senses and great awareness would make him an excellent addition to any team, though not as a fighter as much as a source of information, a detector, etc.
---------------------------------------
Edit: To further limit and define his abilities, lets say his past life experiences were cheifly human or animal though from dimensions and times of all different sorts. I am also fine in requiring GM approval everytime my character wishes to go into a new body. I don't expect him to be jumping bodies frequently but it would be interesting to have a constant character that has different bodies throughout the story. Being in animal bodies would severely limit his powers in battle (and even to do certain tasks) so he'd probably have to wait for the oppurtunity to jump into something stronger and more versatile, if he so chooses. (life as a dog is damn comfortable and popular with the ladies)
Let's say he has amateur experience in pretty much all jobs you can think of, as he's probably done them at some point in his existance. This means at most tasks, he's above average, and better than your untrained schmoe, however not as good as a professional. The kinds of jobs he'd be more professional at would be those requiring a lot of dexterity, awareness, sense perception, wisdom, quickness... eg hacker, spy, priest, druid, hunter... as opposed to things like blacksmith, wrestler, scientist... So if there's no one in the group that's particularily suited to or experienced at a certain task, then he would definately be the one who would have the best chance at succeeding at it.
Obviously I did not approve the character, making some suggestions that would make the character more likely to get approved(basically a complete rewrite would do it). And then I get his response...
That's fine, if your game can't handle this truly original character, it's your problem. I'm already turned off by the fact that you will be playing characters in your own game and that you took more than 24 hours to respond. Best of luck.
